About Me

You can follow me on twitter @safemum

My adoption journey began in 2004.  My two gorgeous girls came to live with us in 2007 when they were 5 1/2 and almost 4 years old.  I thought I was going to take 6 months to a year off work, as adoption leave, to help them settle into our family.  However, it soon became clear that  they needed much more than we first expected.

Prior to this, I had spent many years working in administration and management in a variety of corporate industries around the UK although I had to leave for a while to attend to the needs of the girls.

I had a very steep learning curve where I learned a lot about attachment and trauma and how early life experiences can shape your future and affect the way you function and behave in life.  I advocate strongly for my children and believe it is absolutely necessary to learn therapeutic parenting and to recognise that these children need a very type of parenting approach.  I’ve got used to the funny looks, the disapproving comments and carry on anyway!

Now, we are still learning, exploring and trying to continue therapeutically, whilst balancing everyday life and whatever challenges are thrown in.

  1. Great to see your blog and thanks for linking up to the Secret Santa on The Adoption Social. Can you please contact us with your email address so we can send you more information on what to do next for the Secret Santa. Many thanks,

  2. Hi, just been reading about your recent troubles with school. How horrendous for you and especially your bigly – 11 is still so young to be in high school at the best of times, but for vulnerable kids its just too hard. Hope you find an alternative school for her in double quick time. I’ll be bobbing by again to see how things go.

    All the best, GM

  3. I commend you on stepping up to this most difficult challenge. Parenting is difficult enough when giving birth to them let alone not knowing completely what they’ve been through. Good luck to you, look forward to following your journey.💌Trista, Domesticated Momster
